Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

6 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith and Honeycrisp recommended)

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 tablespoon cornstarch

For the Oatmeal Topping:

1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Apples: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch until well combined. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Make the Oatmeal Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nuts (if using). Stir until mixed. Pour the melted butter over the mixture and combine until everything is evenly coated and crumbly.

Assemble the Dish: Evenly sprinkle the oatmeal topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish, ensuring full coverage.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the apples are tender, and the topping is golden brown and crisp.

Cool and Serve: Let the apple crisp cool for about 10 minutes before serving. This dish is delightful on its own or served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
